New PostNL design conditions direct mail

On Aug. 18, PostNL updated its design conditions for direct mail. These conditions determine how your mail pieces must look in order to be delivered without problems and without extra costs. In this article you can read about the most important changes as well as practical tips you can pay attention to when designing your mailing.

The main changes in brief:

  • Addresses should always be left-aligned from now on
  • Minimum bendability of your mail piece: the long side must bend at least 10 mm when pressed gently
  • Self-mailers must have a fully enclosed long side
  • Mail pieces in foil, window envelopes and paper wraps must be tight and wrinkle-free
  • No more hard or sharp inserts (such as key chains or pens) in unpackaged mail items

What should you pay attention to when designing direct mail?

In addition to these changes, there are some points of interest that will help you avoid returns and extra charges. We have listed 6 important tips for you:

    1. Error-free addresses: we are happy to help you with an address check
    2. Code your mail items for better processing (and discounts)
    3. Leave the index area free (20 x 140 mm at the edges)
    4. Always include the sender address in the upper left corner, on 1 line
    5. Place the Port Paid logo in the upper right corner
    6. Ensure adequate contrast and print quality (at least 300 dpi)

What does this mean to you?

If you take these conditions into account in the preliminary stages, you’ll prevent your mail from being held up, mishandled or unnecessarily more expensive. Proper preparation when designing your mailing saves time, money and frustration.

And want to make sure your direct mail is fully compliant with the new requirements? Let us take a look at your design or production. Then you can be sure that everything goes smoothly through the PostNL machines.
